Victoria Lindley reports:

Winter Head was going to be a good test for W1. A few weeks before Fairbairns but a significantly shorter course, our plan was simply to attack the race and see what we could do. With the added advantage that we were rowing in the first division, and therefore would be back in time for brunch, everyone seemed pretty happy as we set off from the Boat House. Our paddle down wasn't fantastic, but soon we span and were ready to begin our race. When it was our turn to start, Tom employed some very slow coxing techniques in order to leave a decent gap between us and the boat in front, and then we set off at the Motorway Bridge, almost immediately settling into a strong rate 32, with things in the boat feeling very nice. We held this rate for the entire race, taking distance off the boat in front of us, and supported by lots of people on the bank. It felt like a strong row, described by Gripper as 'gutsy', and by Robyn, to whom we are eternally grateful for subbing, as 'much better than she expected from the row down'. Later on we found out that we came fourth, which we were very happy with as it put us right in the mix approaching Fairbairns- and we were even the fastest over 1km! A great race, sadly lacking in race cake, but good for building confidence before Fairbairns.

Patrick Nevill (totally impartially) reports:

It was a cold and windy day but this could do nothing to dampen the boat's spirit on the start line thanks to some stirring inspirational words from Patrick Nevill in seat 7. This would be our first race we had done so we were eager to put in a good performance. We set off and had a glorious first 100m but after this initial eagerness we did lose a bit of our length. This led to a hard 2.5km to the finish and although the technique was lacking, what wasn't was the boat's determination and we still managed to place 7th out of the novice men. And of course we celebrated with a post race spoons.
